Julia Mukaida—a McKinney harpist and member of the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra and Texas Music Educators Association All-State Orchestra—will join a Carnegie Hall youth orchestra tour to advance her music career.

McKinney High School student Brooke Barragan, 17, earned international recognition by taking fifth place in nursing assisting after placing third at the Texas HOSA competition — she impressed judges with her clinical skills and quiz-based knowledge as an aspiring neuroscientist.

McKinney native Nate Sheets, founder of Nature Nate’s Honey, launched his statewide campaign for Texas Agriculture Commissioner for the 2026 election.

He said he will challenge incumbent Sid Miller with strong conservative values and has filed a report showing more than $410,000 in campaign funds — a sign of his competitive effort.

McKinney officials confirmed that the homestead exemption for seniors and disabled homeowners will remain at $90,000 for the 2025-26 tax year—ensuring the benefit stays the same.

McKinney will host a public meeting on July 30 at 6 p.m. to review the $40-45 million Lower 5 Plaza project—a planned community space to reconnect downtown areas along State Highway 5, with construction set to begin in 2027.
